Conservation Week by Yvonne Caulfield

Conservation Week

Week 8 of Term Three was Conservation Week; in fact it is its 50th anniversary.

To celebrate 9Q have been exploring conservation issues in New Zealand. In our science class, we were lucky to have a session with Matua Tip Winiata.

Tip taught us about traditional uses of many native plants, especially harekeke (flax) and ti kouka (cabbage trees). We learnt how to harvest and what these important plants can be used for.

We have been discussing the unique flora and fauna that can be found in Aotearoa. In the new term we will begin to gather data for our yearly biodiversity unit. We are excited to also start planning for action to support the Town Belt Kaitiaki.
