Senior Boys Football Tournament 2019

This year we were lucky to host the boys football Linwood tournament here in Dunedin.

With the grounds located about 200m away from the school, we were disappointed to hear that we still had to attend morning classes.

Our first game was played at 7pm on the new Logan Park turf against James Hargest. It was a tight game but, in the second half for sure, we seemed to dominate possession and with 10+ shots, we were unlucky to score. A controversial “over the line” call went against us and kept the score at 0-0.

In our second game we were pitted against Dunstan, a weaker side in our group. Goals from Amasio (C), Samuel, and Harry gave us the slight edge in a 3-2 win.

Another 0-0 in the afternoon meant we were currently undefeated in our group, and a win in our last game would mean we were almost guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals. Goals from Phillip and Samuel had us leading 2-0. A goal coming right before the half for them as well as another directly after leveled up the game at 2-2. The second half was very back and forth, counter attacks flying every couple of minutes. A late penalty awarded to us was put wide. Keeping our heads up, we pushed for that winner and an unfortunate penalty awarded against us was converted, which meant we ended up on the wrong side of another 3-2. Ending our unbeaten streak, finishing fourth in our group put us in the 13th-16th bracket, a disappointing result that put us in a position we thought not possible.

A 1-0 loss to Gore sent us to the 15th place playoff, where we faced Verdon. Going down 0-1, Marcus leaped up like a salmon to win a header from a corner, and put it in the back of the net, bringing the scores back level. They put one more past us, before Phillip put one over the top to Amasio, who passed it to Harry. Harry was able to find the back of the net to bring it back to 2-2. Taking the game to penalties, Matai, Matthew, Marcus, and Amasio all scored their pens, which was enough to win us the game and 15th place.

Big thank you to Mr Govan and Finn Kelly for Coaching and Managing the team. A great experience for all that we know we will improve next year.
