November Sports Round Up

We've had a busy Term 4 so far.

We have three Handball teams in the secondary school competition. The Senior Mixed A team is playing well; drawing against Kings A and winning against Kings B so far.

Zoe Degas, Laura Graham and Jemma Wong play for the U19 Otago Handball team. They won against Canterbury U19 Girls.   Joe McKee and Daniel Cowles play for the U19 Otago Handball team. Thanks to OSSSA and Otago Handball for the support with Handball.

A highlight on the year's calendar is the Sporting and Cultural Blues Awards held on 27 October. A number of senior students received Sporting Blues with the following students earning Premier Sporting Blues for their outstanding performance at regional or national level.

Ben Dubyk for Football and Futsal.

Jacob Duffy for Athletics.

Alice McNoe for Orienteering.

Hamish McKinlay for Harriers - first in Otago in Under 20 Cross Country and a member of the winning team in the NZ Road Relay Champs.

Mane Marshall for Boxing - silver medal in NZ Boxing Champs this year.

Summer sports teams are well underway. Our futsal teams are doing well including our 6 junior teams. The top Junior Boys team in Division One have had good wins. Our Touch Team is in the top mixed division and with some excellent coaching are performing well.

Recently five students travelled to Invercargill for Kendo grading. In conjunction with Otago Kendo we offer a School Kendo club. In Kendo before reaching dan or “black belt” grade, students are awarded kyu grades from 7th to 1st.

Kendo Grading results:

Alex Campbell 6th kyu

Nick Tregonning, Jayden Te Tana, Alice McNoe and Georgia Ford-Keen 5th kyu

Preparations for the South Island Secondary School Junior Volleyball Champs in Christchurch later this month are going well with the girls playing two games a week. The team will play in the Junior Sports Tournament and Otago Champs in preparation.

A variety of teams are playing in the Junior Sports Tournament in November. We will have 3 Handball teams, 5 Dodgeball teams, 3 Volleyball teams as well as Waterpolo and Touch teams.

Ella Molteno (Year 10) has been selected to represent New Zealand by the NZ Luge Association  and will travel to Austria and Germany leaving mid December.  Ella will train with her Austrian coach and the Austrian Youth Development squad until the end of January.  She is hoping to compete in the Junior World Champs in January 2018.
