Sports Successes

Highlights include New Zealand reps in Handball and NZ honours in Diving as well as South Island honours in Kendo and Otago champions in Athletics.

Handball

Five years of handball development at Logan Park shows real success. Two students have been selected for New Zealand teams.  Ethan Dalwood U20 New Zealand Handball Team and John Barham U18 New Zealand Handball Team. They travel to Rarotonga in December for the Men's IHF Trophy Oceania region which also serves as a qualification event for an event in Europe. Ethan Dalwood, John Barham and Yannick Medvecky-Wolkenhauer were involved with the Otago Mens Handball team that won the New Zealand championships.

Athletics

Logan Park had a fabulous day at the Otago Secondary School Athletics Championships in October. Highlights: Nick James-Pirie, George Fisher, Ethan Lambeth and Nico Alverez Rey-Virag impressively won the prestigious 4x400 relay race. The U15 boys team of Adam Kaloga, Aidan Dixon, Ramon Quennell and Amelio Kaloga were 2nd in the 4x100. Nico won the Snr boys 1500m with a beautifully timed run to take the lead with 200m to go. He also won the Senior boys 800m with ease. 

Other Athletics successes: George Fisher 2nd in Senior Boys 800m, 1st in Senior Boys 400m Nick James Pirie 2nd in Senior Boys 400m Adam Kaloga 2nd place in the 100 and 200m. Amelio Kaloga 3rd place in the 100 and 200m Jake Hibbert 1st in the U15 Hammer.

Kendo

Kendo, a Japanese martial art, has been offered at Logan Park for the past 4 years thanks to a relationship between the school and the Otago Kendo club. Alexander Jansen attended the South Island Kendo Championships recently, gaining a silver individual medal. His team earned a gold in the team competition. Alexander also was awarded the Fighting Spirit award.

Diving

During 2022 Bella Meek-Mallan has been a strong member of the Diving Otakou Competitive Squad. She has represented Dunedin at the South Island Championships, where she placed 1st on both the 1m and 3m boards. She also represented the Southern Region at the New Zealand National Championships this year.

Bella recently competed in Auckland for two events. The Merv Campbell Invitational and the New Zealand Secondary Schools. Bella came home with a Bronze medal from these events.

Bella has one more event for 2022. It will be her first international event. She will be heading to Australia this month to compete for New Zealand at the Australian School Games. Bella works hard and is dedicated to her training in diving. She has come so far this year and her coaches are excited to see her continue to grow and improve for next year.

Petanque

Matthew and Rebecca Scott were selected to represent Otago/Southland in an open grade competition. They played against Canterbury and Wellington in October. Matthew's team went on to win the Tri Star Championship cup achieving 2nd highest points for his team. It was a huge achievement to be selected as they have beaten out more experienced adults who have played for Otago and some for New Zealand. They will travel to Rotoroa for the Nationals next month. They are both performing at an amazing level and will one day represent New Zealand at the sport if they continue on their pathway.
