Mana Pounamu Awards Presentation

Both Sophie and Liam (Kai Tahu) have excelled in a number of areas as well as contributing to our wider kura. Sophie wins the Teina / Junior award and Liam the Tuakana / Senior award.  They were presented their awards at a formal ceremony in October. 

Sophie Yr 10 embodies manakitanga and humility. As a student she is conscientious, respectful and a real team player. She sets herself high standards in every area. She has been part of our Te Kapua o Te Raki Kapa Haka for 2 years and involved in supporting Te Wiki o te Reo Maori events and celebrations. She won Best All Round Year 9 Māori Studies Tikanga award 2021. Her teachers all respect her and appreciate her work ethic.
Sophie's service in the community is also exemplary. Her volunteer work for St John’s Ambulance Youth Cadets is impressive where she has a leadership role and a rank as a Corporal. She also volunteers with before school care at Bradford Primary School. She has given service as a school librarian and in our canteen. She also works hard on fundraising and supporting others.

Liam Yr 13 is another outstanding student. He has leadership roles within our kura as a Māori Prefect as well as being a Drama Prefect. He has given wonderful service to our Kapa Haka over the years and is a technical expert with our school drama / dance productions. Liam also volunteers at Dunedin Repertory Theatre helping with audio/visuals during the school holidays and has been a member of the Children's Repertory Theatre troupe since 2016, participating sometimes three times a year in performances. Liam volunteers for Predator Free NZ as well as volunteering at George Street Normal School (his former primary school).

Liam is academically strong and will complete his Level 3 NCEA and University Entrance qualification this year. He has won creative writing competitions and other awards. He is a role model for younger students and is ethical, compassionate and inclusive of everyone.
