Peak to Peak by Taya Kain

Peak to Peak 2022

On September 10 the LPHS Adventure race teams competed in the annual Queenstown Peak to Peak event.

This is a multisport race that goes from the top of the Remarkables ski area, through Queenstown to the top of Coronet Peak. This involved a ski, downhill bike, tandem kayak, run and an uphill road bike. Both teams did very well earning first and second place in the secondary schools category having completed the race in just over 3 hours.

Hannah Yeardley had this to say:

Two teams of five students trained for 3 months leading up to what's called the Silver Creek Peak to Peak competition. This was held in Queenstown on September 10th. The competition is a multi-sport race, you can enter it as a solo, duo or team. As a team, each person completes one of the following legs (in this order); 2km ski, 17km downhill mtb, 7km kayak, 9km run and 9km uphill bike. For ‘Logan Park 1’ these people were Taya Kain, Amelia James-Pirie, Hannah Yeardley, George Fisher and Bill Campbell, respectively. For ‘Logan Park 2’ these people were Caitlin McDonald-Waters, Tsugumi Watanabe, Madeline Simons, Nick James-Pirie and Oe Hayward.

Days before the competition Amelia and Nick got sick. We decided that Taya would cover for Amelia and do the ski as well as the downhill mountain-biking for ‘Logan Park 1’. We were left without a seasoned runner for ‘Logan Park 2’ though. Desperate, on the day we were leaving, one of us asked Ethan Lambeth whether he would do it. He agreed so he ended up coming and competing with us :)

The weather was sunny and bright on the day and the course provided views of the most scenic parts of Queenstown. I would say all of us enjoyed the experience, both on and off the course.
