Classics Quizzes

This year four senior and two junior Logan Park teams competed in the annual Classics Quizzes hosted by Otago University and the Classical Association, another series of fun-filled evenings characterised by camaraderie and a healthy spirit of competition.

One of our senior teams came fourth, and the Year 10 junior team came third, both respectable results. I wish to give special commendation to the year 10 team of only three competitors which placed third: Dekin Jones, Floriaan Keenan and Jake Knox, rather than the usual four. Our dedicated team of Year 9s also deserves credit as it was smaller than planned due to last-minute absences and consisted of Anya McKinney and Dominic Mein, who strived bravely in spite of this hindrance. A fun evening was had by all, and the motivation has been kindled to do even better next year.

In the lead-up to the Quiz the Year 9s honed their skills with study sessions covering a panoply of Greek and Roman gods, historians, scientists, inventors, politicians, generals and their conquests and adversaries, and assorted additional trivia and language features.

We are lucky to have a flourishing Classics Department and Classical Association in Dunedin. Together they have been organising this quiz since at least 1990, giving students the opportunity to meet and compete with others who share an enthusiasm for classical history and culture, and to meet members of the Classics department.
