Winning Science DisplayMeran Campbell-Hood by Otago Daily Times

Top in Otago Science Fair Award

Year 12 student Meran Campbell-Hood won the overall Otago Science and Technology Fair, Best in Fair Award for her display, "North by North-West."

And Grant McNaughton, Year 11 won the Premier Award for General Excellence and the University of Otago Premier Award for his "Honouring an Ocean."

Meran's display built on her award-winning work of last year, which won her selection for the "Realise the Dream" conference and then the Royal Society of NZ travel award which saw her attend the 2014 Youth Science Conference in Melbourne.

For Meran it all began in Year 7 when Meran's grandfather posed the question, "Can soil nutrients be detected by photography?"  She developed a method to test for soil nutrients, such as copper and selenium, using red-green-blue characteristics of plants as captured in digital photographs. Meran wanted to see the project through to completion due to a love of Physics.
