Sports Round Up by Frankie Vella

August Sports Round Up

Term 3 continues to be busy with lots of students participating and competing in sports.

The Co-Ed Winter Sports Tournament in June was a highlight with well over 100 students involved. We won both the Football and Hockey and were second overall. Students enjoyed competing with their team mates in Football, Hockey, Curling, Basketball, Badminton and Netball. Thanks to all our coaches and team managers.

We've had some superb results in a number of other areas recently.
George Vare has been selected in the Athletics NZ Training Squad for the NZ Men’s u20 and u18 4 x 100m Relay teams.  He will train for the Junior World Champs in Kenya in 2020.

Nicola Molteno competed in the South Island Trampoline Championships in Christchurch in July, and achieved a bronze in trampoline in a big field. She qualified again for Nationals so will be competing at Nationals in October.

Rebecca Dalphin competed in the Otago Cross Country Open champs and won the U18 girls race.

Luke Brinsdon (14) represented Otago at the Yonex Badminton New Zealand Junior Team Championships 2019, from 7 to 10 July in Palmerston North. Luke was selected for the under 17 team, consisting of 4 boys and 5 girls. The national team championships, held in Palmerston North every July, involves 4 days of intense play with 2 matches most days, each match consisting of doubles, singles and mixed doubles and lasting about 3 hours.   The Otago U17 team played Hutt Valley, Bay of Plenty Yellow and Manawatu, earning themselves a place in Division 1. They then played RJ Physio North Harbour, Auckland 2 and Wellington North which led them to a final match with Southland on the last day of play. There were some very close scores and matches that went to 3 games. Southland won the match with 9 wins to Otago’s 7. Otago was placed 8th in Division 1.

Jorja Hutton also travelled to the National Badminton Championships representing Southland.

Tom Hung and Yannick Medvecky-Wolkenhauer placed 3rd in the Novice Section of the Otago Secondary school Table tennis champs on the 29th June.

Liam Black has been selected for the U15 A Otago Hockey team.

And our popular lunchtime inter-house competition is continuing this term with Netball being the sport of choice.
