Chamber Music NZ competition
The CMNZ competition (Otago regionals) were held on the evening of Friday June 10. Due to covid there were far fewer entries than normal, but once again LPHS achieved some impressive results.
Year 9 student Ozan Biner-McGrath, performing with two students from elsewhere (as the Pancake Squad), won this regional competition with a stunning performance of a Menotti trio.
Cornish Pasties (Zoe Barton, Callum Fotheringham and James Hurley) were one of two Highly Commended acts, performing a trio by NZ composer Alfred Hill.
The LPHS Choir competed in the Big Sing at Knox Church on 13 June. They sang beautifully and have been invited to perform at the South Island Cadenza in Timaru in August.
We had no band entries for this competition this year, however Isaac Randel won best electronic assist award, as a solo artist.
The band are currently working hard toward two goals. The first is a performance at the Midwinter Carnival in the grounds of First Church on the evening of Friday July 8. The second is preparation for the Dunedin Youth Jazz Festival. Our band has won this competition for all three years since it began, so we have lots to prove!
Our Jazz Band has been selected as a finalist for the Essential NZ Jazz Band competition in Wellington on October 1. This was the competition that we entered by recording Loyal.
And both Isaac Randel and Jack Ta are finalists in the Jazz Improvisation competition. Heartiest congratulations to the two of you, and so very well deserved.
