July Sports Round Up

Term 3 promises to continue to be busy on the sporting front.

Ella Molteno continues to shine nationally in Luge. She competed in the New Zealand National Luge Championships during the July holidays and won the Senior Women's individual event. Ella also holds the fastest time for any woman from this event. This is particularly impressive given her age of 15 years.

Sam Yeardley travelled to the United Kingdom with Otago's Youth Academy Squad for the Northern Ireland Football Super Cup. The Northern Ireland Super Cup has run for 35 years and is described as the premier youth football tournament in the UK. It attracts more than 60 teams from all continents of the world. The Otago Youth Academy Squad has been the only NZ based team to have taken part in the invite-only tournament.

Handball continues to grow at Logan Park. Our Sports Prefects organised a 6 week Inter-House Handball competition, which was popular and fiercely contested. Aoraki House won both the Junior and Senior competitions. We appreciated seeing Eion Murray, from the NZ Handball Board, along with NZ representative players Alex Mair and Ashton Lang at our Finals.

Over a hundred Logan Park students were involved in the Co-Ed Winter Sports Tournament in June. The highlight of the day was our Boys 1st Xl Football team beating the Premier Kavanagh 1st XI in the final. At full time the score was drawn at 1-1. Harry Major scored our goal to equalise. Logan Park took our the penalty shoot out with some outstanding saves by Eamon Lupton-Wilson. Our senior boys and girls Basketball teams placed 2nd as did the girls Football team.

Congratulations to Sophie Black, Year 11 who received her 1st Dan Black Belt in Karate during the school holidays. Sophie has been doing karate for eleven years and her dedication and hard work have led to this impressive achievement.
