Maori translation App Shae, Emma, Tip, Hope-Jane and Ihaka by Kristan Mouat

Maori translation App

Our students are helping to develop an English to Maori online translation app.

Maori language students, under the guidance of Matua Tip Winiata, will help to test and trial the app that will provide ultra-fast translations from English to Maori at no cost, to 100,000 users in the community. The GigCity Community Fund is supporting the creation and development of the exciting new app and we are collaborating with the designers of the project; Frederic Dichtel, linguist, Dr Romain Garby, scientist and Dr Alice Harang, physicist. Year 10 Computer Programming enthusiast, Ennis Massey,  has already impressed the developers with his work ethic and skill level.

The project also has support from Te Rōpū Rautaki Reo ki Ōtepoti, the Dunedin Māori Language Strategy Group. We're looking forward to helping shape the development and spreading an appreciation of Te Reo throughout New Zealand through effective and clever technology.
