June Sports Round Up

A highlight of this month has been one of our top gymnasts, Shannon Thorsnes, (17 ) who is in the New Zealand Gymnastics team and competed in the Australian National Championships in Melbourne, competing in the Ribbon, Ropes, Clubs and Ball in a week long event. The New Zealand Team won a Bronze medal overall and Shannon won a Silver medal as an individual in the Clubs section.

Students enjoyed competing in the Co-Ed Schools’ Winter Sports Tournament in rugby, hockey, basketball, football, badminton and indoor bowls. We were third overall.

Our School Cross Country Champs were held recently and our school winners Maddy Bowen, Tyler Stenton- Martin, Henry Gaudin and Molly Morley were also competitive in the Otago Cross Country Champs.

So far in the local Badminton competition, our boys’ first team is the top co-ed school team and is leading the competition with wins against Kings and John McGlashan.

In other sports, Claudia Dakin and Maddie Bowen are trialing for the Otago U17 Girls football team. And Joseph Araya and Solomon Liesbeth are both junior Otago football representatives.

George Vella King, Alexander Woolrych and Frances Barnett are playing in the Premier Reserve Adult Hockey competitions and enjoying the challenge. And our Otago U16 hockey reps Natasha Abbot and Izzy Locker are continuing to do well.

We took along sporting reps and Sports Council members to hear Gordon Tiitchens speak recently. The students were motivated and inspired by his excellent speech.

The school Ice Hockey team is competing well, playing on Wednesday evenings. They won against Taieri College and lost against King’s and are looking good for second place in the competition.

Our Senior A netball team competed in the Otago Secondary School Netball Championships and enjoyed the several days of competition.

In Rugby, our girls’ team is going well, and the boys are getting ready for rep trials later this month.
