Otago Southland Team Relay Championships by Janine Hills

June Sports Round Up

Term 2 continues to be busy and varied with lots of students enjoying a range of sporting opportunities.

Congratulations to Maddox Manawatu who has been selected for the Combined Co-Ed Schools 1st XV to compete in the Otago Rugby Premier Secondary School Competition.

In the Caversham Relay Race, as part of the Cross Country series run by OSSSA, our Senior Boys team ran strongly to place 4th. The race was very competitive and we were competitive against the all boys schools. Our runners are looking forward to the Otago Southland Relay race in Milton next Wednesday.

In Adventure Racing, the South Island Macpac Hillary Challenge event was held in Christchurch in May. Warwick Kain took a mixed team of 8 students to compete. The team had been training with Josh Greer a university student volunteering to support the team to work on their fitness for this race. The race was 6hrs long and involved mountain biking and running a Rogaine course. The students had a great time and their performance earned them an invitation to compete in NZSS Rogaine Championships, being held near Christchurch in August.

Team: Amelia James-Pirie, Tsugumi Parks Watanabe, Madeline Simons, Caitlin McDonald Waters, George Fisher, Bill Campbell, Liam Black, Nicholas James Pirie.

Winter sports are all underway with good numbers participating. The Boys 1st Xl Football team have had a good start to the season with two wins from two games. The Senior A Girls basketball team is excited at the return of Danielle Frost as Coach. Winter teams are looking forward to competing in the Co Ed Winter Sports Tournament at the end of Term 2.

Our Logan Park Cross Country Team did very well at the Otago/Southland Team Cross Country Relay race in June. Logan Park 1 were 1st and Logan Park 2 2nd in the mixed division. We were trailing Taieri College by 300m and Nico ran an outstanding 2.5 km to win by 100m. His time placed him in the top 5 in all divisions. Logan Park 1 - Tsugumi Parks Watanabe, George Fisher, Cora Chapman and Nico Alvarez Rey-Virag. Logan Park 2 - Lily Abbott, Solly Armstrong, Zoe Barton and Loek Van Broekhoven. (Pictured above).

Liam Black will represent Southern U18's in Hockey against Canterbury over Queens Birthday. Liam is hoping to make the final squad of 16 which will be announced after Queens Birthday. We wish him all the best.
