Music Camp by Michaela Cox

Music Camp

63 students attended the annual Music Camp at the beautiful Tirohanga Camp underneath the Maungatuas, leaving after school on Friday 11 March for the weekend.

The students are all members of at least one of the school choir, orchestra or jazz band. Several students play in two of these groups and one student runs between rehearsals as a committed member of all three. The dual aims of the camp are to get concentrated time to learn repertoire to help start the year, and to build a sense of musical community around the myriad of activities that are to happen in and around the Music department over the year.

The camp provided a fantastic musical and fun event for all concerned. The students put in an amazing effort and lots of work was achieved. A highlight of the weekend was the informal Saturday evening blackboard concert. The talent on display, together with the enthusiasm for creating ad hoc groups for fun make the evening very special. The occupants of cabin number 3 tore the house down with their brand new composition, 'Cabin number 3'. Senior students were blown away with new talent appearing in the year 9's (Elvis Nicholls and Rebecca Dalphin sang so beautifully).  Our sincere thanks go out to Kristen Gillespie and the other parents who once again delivered fantastic meals and support, and all in a very noisy environment!
