Roger Tobin's farewell

Roger Tobin was farewelled from Logan Park at the end of January. The evening ceremony and supper was one befitting his character.

The gathering of 90 people included his beloved family, dear work colleagues, former students and members of the local community, who waited to share stories and memories.

The Chair of the Board of Trustees, Ruth Barnett, opened the evening with an insight into Roger’s guidance of the school in terms of governance. More well-wishers shared fond memories of Roger from his excellent teaching and many reflected on his time as a leading member of the protests against the 1981 Springbok Tour.

Roger’s speech was exceptional and it reflected how central he had been to government policy and raising standards in education. He spoke of striving for an egalitarian society where all students could enjoy success. Throughout the speech he continued to reflect on his love of Maths and teaching. Our Head Boy and Girl, Connor Seddon and Helen Prime then gifted Roger with a piece of greenstone showing half a face representing the inward search for knowledge.

Roger’s 29 years at Logan Park have been memorable and he looks forward to his new challenging position as Otago's PPTA Field Officer.
