Co-ed Winter Sports Tournament by Frankie Vella

July Sports Round Up

Large numbers of students are enjoying their winter sports from the social through to the much more competitive.

Recent impressive highlights have occurred in Hockey, Badminton, Futsal, Cross-Country and Power-lifting.

Congratulations to Liam Black who has been selected for the Otago U18 Boys Hockey team. Liam is an inspiring member of our Logan Park team, leading by example, regularly setting up plays and mentoring younger players.

At the South Island Secondary School Badminton Championships, in Dunedin in mid-June, our team of Luke Brinsdon, Jack Ta, Oisin Benn and Marcus Davidson competed well with Jack Ta receiving a Best Sportsman Award.

Congratulations are also in order for Luke Brinsdon, a South Island Badminton representative player who is heading to the National Badminton Junior Championships at the end of Term 2. The South Island team is being organised by Mainland Badminton and Luke is the only player from Otago selected for the South Island U17 mixed team of ten. They will play over 4 days in Palmerston North. Luke was selected following trials in Christchurch earlier this year, and then weekend training camps in Invercargill and Dunedin.

We are thrilled with our Cross Country team's performance.

In the Otago/Southland relay: Tsugumi Parks Watanabe, George Fisher, Cora Chapman and Nico Alvarez Rey Virag won the Senior Mixed Relay (O15). And Zoe Barton, Loek Van Broekhoven, Lily Abbott and Solly Armstrong were placed second in the same event.

In the Otago Championships Nico Alvarez Rey-Virag came third in the U16 Boys 4km event.

Well done to Oliver Ashford, Year 10 for his performance in the South Island Powerlifting Championships.  He was first place in his age and weight category 14-18 years.

Well done to a number of our Futsal players.  6 boys have been named in the Southern United Futsal Teams

Marcus Read, Harry Major, Ben Devereux

U16

And congratulations to our great PE teacher and coach James Govan who has been selected to coach the Southern U19 Rep Futsal team.

We're all enjoying the Interhouse Sports lunchtime events run by our Sports Prefects and Sports Council. The mixed teams competing in Netball this term is proving to be an entertaining winner with participants and spectators alike.  Toroa House won the final against Omimi to be the Netball champions.
