NZ Spelling Bee Competition by Louise Farr

Southern Spelling Bee Champions

Congratulations to Cambell Drake who won the Southern South Island semi-finals with Grace Fagerland placing second.

We had four contestants from Logan Park enter the New Zealand Spelling Bee Competition this year; Hannah Hogan, Grace Fagerlund, (both yr 10) Miseki Honjo and Cambell Drake (both year 9)

All four of the students were in the top 280 of New Zealand and went into the semi finals. The Southern South Island Semis were held in August at the Dunedin Art Gallery.

There were 40 students in this round and Hannah got through to the top 20, Miseki got into the top 10 before being knocked out. Grace got second place after a nail biting 6 round knock out session with a year 10 from Wakatipu and Cambell got the number 1 spot.

That means both Cambell and Grace are off to National Spelling Bee finals in Wellington in November, where they will be competing against the top 10 (year 9 and 10) spellers in New Zealand.

So very proud of all four of them, they were calm and composed throughout.
