Learning through Wheke Time

Beccy Shirley - May 29, 2024

At Lyttelton Primary School we pride ourselves on our creativity, teachers and students alike. Through play and their own choice of activities, children learn a great deal through experimenting and extending their ideas.

They learn important social skills through discussing and negotiating ideas with their chosen playmates, such as sharing and taking turns, and being open to and incorporating the ideas of others.

They create buildings, forts and castles with elaborate designs, like the block ideas seen here with Arlo, Frankie and Felix. Sachi, Max and Rafa are creating detailed cars, 4-wheel drives and even a truck and trailer, with more complex features. They had great fun with their vehicles during our Road Safety Week when Nicola created a pedestrian crossing and road signs.

They learn to experiment with techniques through art to find new and exciting results in their paintings, like this scrunch painting idea by Georgia and Annabelle. Siggy and Alice are creating a scene using gems, sticks and sensory suckers toys.

We love seeing them explore and develop their passions and personalities through play!
