Lyttelton Port Company Visit

Dinah Wallis —

On Wednesday the Enviro group went to Lyttelton Port Company. To have a tour of the L.P.C. and to talk about the new building. I was in the first van, we got there and then waited for the second van.

While we will waiting we went up to the meeting room, it had a really nice feeling carpet. It was sort of decorated like grass and recycled timber on the walls and a TV on the side of the room.

A woman called Kim asked us some questions, for comments on the new building. How it was designed and how we liked it. Then when the second group got there we got into the real stuff. We asked Libby's dad, Phil, some questions about how the technology works, like about the cranes that you see down on the port. They pick up containers it was very cool.

Krystal started her speech about the marine mammals and that plastic bags. A plastic bag can stay in the water for about a hundred years before turning into little miniature particles. For a plastic bottle, it takes about 400 years to degrade. We learned a whole lot about that stuff. Then there was an activity during the marine mammals' speech, it was that we had to rip up a piece of paper in 30 seconds. We got pretty far ripping up our paper but then the time was up. Then she started talking about the animals in Lyttelton Harbor, she does work to protect Hector’s Dolphins, blue penguins stuff like that.

I found out that Hector's dolphins are really special because they can only be found in certain parts of New Zealand. Next Kim gave us some plastic rubbish they had found down at the Port. We are going to make a sculpture out of it.

We started to go around with Kim, she showed us a giant printing machine. It was good because they had set up a goose paper if you don't know what goose paper is it's good on one side paper. But they don't have a big enough sign. so we recommended that they put a gigantic sign on it. After that, we went and looked at the rubbish. They had a lot of banana peels in the recycling! I would say they had about 150 cartons of milk, we wondered if they could get one gigantic milk container. When we went into the drying room it was gigantic and compared to the other rooms it smelled like heaven, it was so awesome and it was so warm too.

Then we went back to the van. I had a giganticle fun time, yeah and that was my afternoon!
