Tour of the Korean Icebreaker and Research Vessel RV Araon
On Monday afternoon, eight students from Lyttelton Primary School climbed onboard RV Araon to take a tour and learn about the types of research work undertaken.
I loved the trip to look at the RV Araon Icebreaker Ship. We got to have a tour of the ship and watch a movie about it. I really enjoyed going to the engine room to see the rudders. They can go 360 degrees around in the water, moving the ice away from the hull to stop it from freezing. By Noah
On Monday a small group of kids from our school went on the ice-breaker which was in port. We got a tour around it. We all really enjoy it. We all learnt a lot about the ship and the ice. On the ship they have 2 life boats for 75 people and 4 life rafts that fit 25. We got shown all 4 decks, the engine room, the doctor's room, cabins for staff and scientists. We also got shown the bridge (believe me there is a lot more than just a wheel to steer the boat). Only 3 people need to be on deck at a time. Thanks to Jenny and Ruth for taking us. By Mila B
A few days ago I went on an icebreaker. It was cold. It's name was RV Araon. It goes to Antarctica every year. The navigation deck had lots of button for the Captain to tell his crew how to steer the ship. The crew gave us some Korean snacks for lunch. The ship had a big yellow crane and a helipad. The captain had a big room with a television, couch and a desk for having meetings with the crew and researchers. It was very fun. By Sidney
