One of the questions the children asked was, "Where did the early explorers go when they got to New Zealand?" We have started with learning about maps and studying maps of New Zealand.

The children have drawn their own maps, and some have made models of a map of New Zealand  using blocks or shapes and even playdough. From there we have started talking about the travels of Rakaihautu, who came in a waka to New Zealand and journeyed down the country, giving names to places as he went along. It is exciting to find out about places that we have visited.
