Place Based Learning

Lyttelton Primary School —

Place based education (PBE) immerses students in local heritage, cultures, landscapes, opportunities and experiences, using these as a foundation for the study of language, arts, mathematics, social studies, science and other subjects across the curriculum.

PBE emphasises learning through participation in service projects for the school and/or community. (Taking Action capability) Authentic contexts are key. Horizontal connections between students, the community and wider world is promoted.

We have a strong cultural narrative to weave into our learning experiences.

Rich opportunities to learn are designed to increase the breadth, depth and complexity of the learning experiences with which students engage as they progress along their learning pathways. They are designed to support students to contribute to their communities in ways that build on and strengthen both community and student capabilities. Engaging in rich opportunities to learn from and with their community supports students to:

  • apply their learning in authentic contexts

  • experience belonging to the wider community

  • be recognised for their contributions as community members

  • understand the local community as a system

Tangata Whenuatanga - ‘Affirms Maori learners as Māori - provides contexts for learning where the identity, language and culture (cultural locatedness) of Maori learners and their whanau is affirmed.’’
