Project Jonah for the Takaroa Floor
On Wednesday we had a visit from Kelly of Project Jonah. This is an education program about how to look after the creatures of the ocean.
Kelly put on a fascinating presentation where we learnt lots of amazing facts about whales and dolphins.
Our tamariki completed a 'quick write' of whale and dolphin facts as soon as we arrived back to class. Here is what stood out to them, in their own voices.
A few minutes ago we went to a show about saving sea animals. A blue whale is thirty meters long and its heart is as big as a life size car and its tongue is as heavy as a baby elephant. When you find a whale stuck on the beach you need a sheet to cover its skin because the sun can burn its skin and you need to cover it with water to keep it cool.

So I will tell you 7 facts that I learnt.
Did you know . . .
That a blue whale weighs the equivalent of three T-rex‘s!
That a whale adult is 30 meters long
That blue whale's blow is 6-10 meters long!
That a blue whale's tongue weighs as much as 1 baby elephant!
That a blue whale's fluke is the strongest muscle in the animal kingdom!
That blue whale's fluke is 5.4 meters long!
That an adult blue whale weighs 130 tonnes!
