Norton Close Memorial Orchard
Digging day 10th of December 11am-2pm. Planting day 17th December 11am-2pm.
This land was originally owned by Owen Wright who lost his life in the February 2011 earthquake. The fruit trees were Owen’s pride and joy. This parcel of land is now part of the Red Zone and Smith Street Urban Farm have been awarded a lease to manage and develop this site further. Their aim is to “Regenerate and enhance the existing memorial orchard at 6 Norton Close. We are specifically looking at building local food resilience in place with community led development principals. Special consideration will be given to the ecological sensitivity of the regeneration of the Port Hills and primarily the Major Hornbrook track. Integrating native biodiversity into edible landscapes will showcase the ability for a landscape to serve multiple usages, these being habitat for birds and insects, recreational activities such as foraging and a space to reflect. Special consideration will be given to the historical nature of the site with preference to heritage trees whilst utilizing the sites microclimate.” If anyone wants to find out more contact George at georgina@smithst.nz
