Adults Wanted

Dinah Wallis —

We are continuing our work on The Lyttelton Pest Mangement and Biodiversity Project.

Lately, some Lyttelton school kids have been doing pest control work. The plan was to explore the idea of pests in our environment. First, some kids went up into the reserve and set up some tracking tunnels and chew cards. We found out that possums, mice, and hedgehogs live in the Urumau Reserve and on Port Saddle areas.

Then we asked ourselves- What we can do about pests? What we will need and how our efforts will affect the community and native animals?

We are now working with Kirsty Brennan and John Garrett from the Lyttelton Reserves Management Committee to start the trapping.

Our aim is to make the Port Hills predator-free by 2020.

We need some adults who are interested in helping with this project. Once a week we need 2 lines of six traps checked, kills will then need to be recorded using a phone app Trap NZ, and traps reset.

If you want to do this then contact Dinah. We will then meet with you and work out a timetable and John will set you up on Trap NZ.
