Playbased 'Wheke Time'
While playing, children work through conflicts with objects, other children, and adults. Play provides an outlet for curiosity, information about the physical world, a safe way to deal with anxiety and social relationships. In the long run, play serves children's inner needs, hopes, and aspirations. Magda Gerber
This 'Wheke Time' session happens everyday from 10.00 - 11.00am. We are loving the creative things we are seeing the Harakeke children get involved in, during this time.
They are also learning to use the specific strategies we are teaching them, to solve problems, and are showing they already know some good ways of working together. They are learning to be empathetic, to persevere with their creations, and to broaden their repertoire of social skills. We have been impressed with their focus, their imaginations, and their outcomes.
While they are playing in their interest areas, the three Harakeke teachers are pulling out groups for Guided Reading sessions.
