Sculpting a Kororā
Fun with Clay.
Sarah Amazinnia & Holly Cunningham (together Olearia Design) are working with Manaki Whenua Land Care Research NZ on a range of Art projects highlighting pro-environmental initiatives in and around Lyttelton Harbour. One of these projects is centred on the indigenous Kororā (White Flippered Penguin). They are working with ceramic artist Nikki Wallace-Bell to offer a series of clay workshops at Naval Point Yacht Club between 1 & 30 September.
They are hoping to raise awareness of these penguins in our back yard and encourage a sense of guardianship for their wellbeing. LPC has recently installed a number of breeding boxes to help boost numbers and there are a range of initiatives underway to increase their numbers as they return to breed in the coastal headlands.
We have 60 students in Years 4-8 participating in this special learning opportunity. We have been allocated 6 morning workshops, and will have groups of 10 students attending each session.
