Festival of Lights Friday 29th June
Busy times at school this week and next. Children have been preparing their whetu (stars) weaving for the Festival of Lights Parade next Friday. We hope you can come along to the parade. Please see this important notice.
There is a fresh smell of soup permeating through the school today as the children prepare shared kai to celebrate Matariki . Please feel welcome to join us for some kai at 12:30pm on Monday (bring a cup and spoon!) More here.
Children from Totara and Raupo are looking forward to visiting Kindy on Monday and Busy C's on Tuesday to play some games and share our school values and learning through PB4L and KiwiCan this year. A few have grown since they were there last! Thank you to Kiwi Can for your support.
Next Thursday our children are involved in making some special art work to display at the Festival of Lights. We have teamed up with 2018 New Zealander of the Year Nominee and microbiologist Dr Siouxsie Wiles to create ‘Bioluminaire: a glowing art gallery’ for this year’s Lyttelton Harbour Festival of Lights.
Dr Wiles is held in high esteem for her work with bioluminescent bacteria to find new medicines and is on a mission to enthuse children with both the art and the science of bioluminescence. She’s a wonderful science communicator and we’re delighted she has agreed to help Lyttelton School produce what promises to be a marvellous new attraction for the Festival of Lights. Find out more about the process here. To come and see the glowing artwork come and visit the Lyttelton Port Company's 'Port Talk' cabins, corner Oxford and London Streets from 6:30 - 9:30pm.
Good luck to the children participating in the 'Talent Show next Wednesday. This is a 'Wheke Time' project run by students in Raupo. Please see their article in today's newsletter. Approximate times for the acts are: 5-8 yrs 1-2pm, 9-11 yrs 2-2:40pm, 12+yrs 2:40-3pm.
Good luck also to Rowan, Dylan, Alexander and Tashi from Raupo who are completing in the Epro8 (Engineering, problem solving, innovate) finals series competition at Chisnellwood Intermediate on Wednesday evening. What a tremendous achievement getting through to the next round for the second year in a row.
Reminder about the NZEI meeting for teaching staff on Tuesday afternoon. Please read these details.
Have a good weekend everyone.
