Navigating the journey - information session for Rakinui parents

Rachel Cummins —

A facilitator from Family Planning will be at school on Monday 1 August at 6pm for an hour for parents who would like further information.

As part of our Health curriculum at Lyttelton Primary School, we will be teaching a programme called Navigating the Journey: Sexuality Education, in Rakinui this term.

This key resource has been written by Family Planning and reflects the currrent research, and recommended guidelines from the Ministry of Education.

Your child’s teachers will deliver this programme in the students usual safe and supportive learning environment. Teachers receive external support through training from Family Planning Educators to continue to build their teaching strategies.

There are five themes:

  • Establishing a positive learning environment Te whakarite i tētahi ao ako huapai
  • Who am I? Ko wai au?
  • Relationships Ngā whanaungatanga
  • Growing and changing Te tipu me te huri o te tangata
  • Staying safe Te noho haumaru

Students have the opportunity to learn and discuss a range of contexts for example: pubertal change, healthy relationships, body image, intimacy, conception, hygiene, gender identity, reproductive system, consent, sexual orientation, inclusion and diversity, and the influence of mass and social media. The lessons are constructed with age appropriate material.

We request that you talk to your child’s teacher if you have any further questions regarding the programme.
