Kimochis in Harakeke

Francie Graham —

I wonder if you've heard your child mention Bug, or Lovey Dove, or Cloud, or Cat, or Huggtapus, recently? These creatures are Kimochis, and part of a programme teaching our children about different personalities and different feelings.

This social-emotional learning is the process through which children (and adults) acquire the knowledge and attitudes and skills to recognise and manage emotions, demonstrate caring and concern for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and handle interpersonal situations effectively.

Bug is thoughtful, and cautious, and doesn't like change. Lovey Dove is calm and nurturing, and wise; Cloud can be a bit unpredictable - happy, then angry, he has a hard time controlling his emotions; Cat is a leader, but can be a bit bossy; Huggtapus is very affectionate, but can sometimes get a bit carried away.

By using these characters, we will be teaching ways in which our children can accept differences in each other, respect themselves and others, display compassion for others, resolve conflict, display perseverance and learn to regulate their emotions by naming them and practising solutions.
