Te Wheke exhibition attended by Rakanui students

Maia —

Over the week, Totara and Raupo visited the Te Wheke exhibition at the Christchurch art gallery, and made their own tapa cloth designs.

The Te Wheke exhibition was showcasing Polynesian art, including tapa cloth, and some more modern pieces, like some hand drawn art by Polynesian and Maori artists. After learning about some pieces, the students went into the classroom to make their own stamps, based off  what they just saw, and then printed it to make tapa cloth designs. Students were allowed to switch around stamps to create unique designs. We also enjoyed eating our lunch in the botanic gardens. I personally enjoyed the more modern tapa cloth that we saw, and some of the hand drawn prints were especially interesting.
