Hector's Dolphin

Kowhāi —

The Year 4's in Kowhai have been studying Hector's Dolphin.

Mini Mammal

The little mammals Hector’s Dolphins grow no longer than 1.5 m in length and feed on fish.

Among the smallest Dolphins in the world, the Hector‘s Dolphin only swims in New Zealand's waters.

The Hector’s Dolphin is related to the North Island’s Maui Dolphin which looks almost alike to the Hector’s Dolphin!

I really enjoyed studying Hector’s Dolphins : )

Hector’s Dolphin

One of our most endangered species of marine mammals is Hector’s dolphin.  They are endemic to New Zealand. They are no longer than 1.5 m in length. They are the world's smallest dolphins. Males are interestingly enough are lighter and smaller than females. Females only have four or five calves in a lifetime! Traditionally, Maori watched dolphin movements to predict the weather. Their dorsal fin is very distinctive in the water. You would never be mistaken Hector’s fin for a shark’s!

 Hector’s Facts

Did you know Hector’s dolphins grow no more than 1.5 m in length? Another fact is that they are only found in NZ waters.   Also, there are two subspecies of Hector’s dolphins. A very good fact is that Hector’s dolphins are among the world’s smallest marine mammals. It is amazing that they are the only dolphins in NZ with a rounded black dorsal fin. It is good that males are slightly smaller and lighter than females.   Wow, most females only have four or five calves in a lifetime.

Hectors are awesome!!!
