Rich Learning from Kōwhai Students at Home!

Beccy Shirley —

Well, we are in unprecedented times here with being locked down during the COVID 19 pandemic. However, there is an incredibly positive up-side to our current situation.

We are positive thinkers, so we know the saying, "Every cloud has a silver lining", well, we are certainly seeing the silver lining in our children's pride their online learning.

The tamariki have completed so many worthwhile projects, from the comfort of their own homes and gardens.

We've been learning about our Māhinga Kai and our environment, and what sustains it through such activities as: examining soils and species living in it and above it, looking at what species need to survive and how they help the environment they are in, identifying how to look after our environment through reusing, recycling and reducing waste and helping our whānau with gardening and keeping things tidy.

In Maths we've been focussing on position and orientation, working with directions and we're putting a big push on practising through the New Zealand Maths platform - e-ako - to strengthen our mathematical knowledge. Many children have been using measurement and calculation skills through baking and cooking for their whānau.

We've completed wonderful writing and reading activities about ANZAC Day and lots of tamariki have shared stories of their connections to those who have served in the Army, Navy or Air Force.

We have created obstacle courses in our houses and gardens, told silly jokes while wearing silly costumes and shared our beloved pets.

The children's Artworks will blow you away! What creative tamariki we have in Kōwhai.

Hey, enough of me skiting about our children!  Check their work out for yourself through our blog.....
