Nature Rangers Climate Change Pick a Path mural presentation

Rachel Cummins —

Three representatives (Silvia, Quinn, Amelia) from our Enviro group, Nature Rangers presented their proposal for painting a mural to engage with our community about climate change and coastal adaptation.

Our Nature Rangers have been working with Sian Carvell from Future Curious learning about the science of climate change the impacts and actions we can take.

Since 2020, the City Council has been working on a climate change plan around coastal hazards and adaptation. As part of their plan and with support from Sian, 13 Christchurch Schools including Lyttelton Primary, took part in a climate change learning programme. The programme included not only learning about the science of climate change, but also how to talk about climate change and work together to reduce and adapt to its impacts.A lot of us also took on a number of actions to help reduce and adapt to climate change. These included songs, presentations, and learning expos. We also learnt about our rights as children, including our right to have a say on something that interests and affects us, and climate change is definitely that! Last year, it was agreed that Whakaraupō was the first community the Council would work more closely with.Using our understanding and urgency to act, over the past few months we have been planning a community climate change mural, with a focus on Lyttelton and the things we value about living and going to school here.

We have taken the proposal to the BOT and they will let us know their decision on placement of the mural by Friday.
