Scooter Skills

Rowena McNabb —

Last week Georgia and Lilly from Sports Canterbury came to Lyttelton Primary to host a special scooter session.

A group of year three students from Kōwhai enjoyed learning some useful safety tips and new ways to use their scooters. Helmet Safety was first on the list and we were taught the two fingers rule for the correct placement and tightness. Use two fingers to check your forehead, under the chin and beside the ear. Then they explained the safest way to stand with your scooter is both feet together on one side.

As it turns out the brake is used for slowing down and then to stop you step off the scooter and take three steps then stop. Tamariki got to practise this way of controlling their scooters through games. They had a go at a slalom course and tried changing from one foot to the other while still scooting along.

Students showed maanakitanga by listening and following the instructions and manawanui as the session was an hour long. Even though they were a little tired at the end they persevered and wrote some excellent recounts about the lesson.

A big thanks to Sports Canterbury for hosting the Scooter Session.
