Khyla McBride —

Saturday May 11th - 9 am to 1pm. Methodist Mission Offices, 258 Stuart Street, parking is available or online Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th May from 6-8pm (must attend both evenings)

Parenting Through Separation is an information and education programme. It is designed through is designed to help people understand and manage the effects of separation on children, and how to put their children’s needs first. If a child’s parents, guardians or other family members/whānau who have responsibilities around a child's care cannot agree on an aspect of the child’s day to day care, the parties in the dispute can attend a Parenting Through Separation (PTS) course. PTS is designed to help both parties agree on a solution which is best for their children. Anyone can attend who is in a dispute about child arrangements. All PTS courses are free. The Ministry of Justice funds them for any legal guardian supporting a child through parental separation.

Generally, both parties in the dispute will attend the programme separately but can normally bring a support person with them.

The course focuses on:

  • understanding how separation affects children and how to talk to them about it.
  • why it's important to keep children away from conflict and how to do this.
  • how to discuss childcare arrangements amicably.

Participants receive information and resources covering strategies for co-parenting with their ex-partner or other carer. Reaching agreement through a parenting plan, and how to navigate the Family Justice System are also part of this course. The course does not provide legal advice or counselling.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
