Macandrew Bay School Newsletter - 15 March 2024

Kia ora koutou,

It has been quite a week for learner agency at Macandrew Bay School! Members of our school marketing team have been on the Breeze radio station promoting our School Fair and the ODT featured an article on some of our superstar tamariki that have been involved with the Pump/Bike Skills Track design...not too mention a number of new orders for the Tūī cookbook.  Our amazing Year 6 tamariki have been working on a plan to reduce waste and to ensure there are good systems for recycling at our school fair on Sunday (special thanks to Mrs Hawker, Mrs Sharma and Rowan Cooke for all their help).

Strike percussion group visited on Wednesday and they were remarkable! It was an incredible performance and the tamariki got to see a trio of passionate and talented musicians. Four of our classes also visited Orokonui this week and it was wonderful to hear the highlights of what the tamariki spotted - Takahe, Kākā, Kārearea, Tuatara, Otago Skink and more!

Only 2 sleeps until our School Fair which is going to be AMAZING! Katherine Cooke and Kim Meredith-Jones our amazing fair co-ordinators have been working around the clock as have many others behind the scenes. Grateful thanks to everyone involved! We live in wonderful community and I know that Sunday will be a huge success.  If you have a couple of spare hours tomorrow to help set up - pop into school from 9:30am and from 9:00am on Sunday.  I look forward to seeing you all at the Fair (don't forget your St Patricks costume!).

Our School Fair starts at 11am on Sunday...spread the word.

Noho ora mai

There have been so many plums in up in our Junior School area! What can we do so we don't end up wasting them or they go rotten?

by Mel Gaul

Last Friday during Ka Hikitia (Junior collaboration time) we thought about the problem of the excess plums up in our Junior School area. We thought about the question...What can we do so we don't end up wasting them or they go rotten? We followed our new Tūhura Design Thinking process - Question, Understand, Think, Build, Try and Share.

Strike Percussion Group

by Nic Brown

At Macandrew Bay we aim to foster a love of The Arts! Every second year we hold The Macandrew Bay School Art Auction which is our major biennial fundraiser. The proceeds from this fundraiser enrich the children's experiences and the learning opportunities at our school and help build a love of the arts amongst our tamariki. On Wednesday we were privileged to be able to bring Strike percussion to our kura. Over the last 20 years Strike has built up a amazing reputation, here and overseas, for powerful and theatrical percussion performances. It was an amazing experience for the tamariki! Well done to our own starts Mr D and Mrs McAuley who were stand out performers too!

COVID- What to do? and other illness

by Nic Brown

We recommend you take the time to read through the expectations we have about illness. It is important we take a sensible, caring approach of not coming to school sick. We are finding it harder each year to get relievers for sick staff and we want to minimise the spread of sickness in classes.
