Co-requisite Literacy and Numeracy Requirements

Theressa Butler —

In 2024, co-requisite literacy and numeracy assessments changed impacting all NCEA students.

From 2024, all NCEA students must complete a literacy and numeracy co-requisite to receive any level of NCEA qualification. The co-requisite is a one-off requirement. These assessments aim to strengthen core literacy and numeracy skills and ensure students are equipped for future success.

Until 2023, the co-requisites were integrated into the assessments students undertook across the curriculum. Now, they are stand-alone nationally standardised tests for numeracy, reading and writing. These tests are offered twice yearly at school and then marked by NZQA.

Once a student passes, they are not required to take the tests again. If a student does not pass on the first attempt, they will have two opportunities every year until they leave school.

When will Mahurangi students sit these?

All Year 10 students will sit the Co-requisites in 2025 in Week 4 and 5 of Term 2, and again in September during Term 3. Those Year 11-13 students who have not gained these assessments yet will have the opportunity to sit these again.

What will the assessments involve?

  • This is a digital assessment set by NZQA using the online platform (only paper if specially requested).

  • All NZQA rules and regulations apply. There will be no derived grades offered if students are unable to attend.

  • These assessments will test skills that students have been working on since the beginning of Year 7 and will be explicitly taught and recapped in English and Maths classes prior to the assessments commencing.

How can you support your child?

  • Encourage reading, writing, and numeracy in daily life.

  • Check if your child has already met the co-requisites through their NCEA login (Year 10 students will go through this set up in their English class)

  • Encourage them to come along to our help sessions:

    > Maths & Numeracy Tuesday 3:30-4:30pm in B block

    > English & Literacy Wednesday 3:30-4:30pm in E4

  • Contact their English or Maths teacher if you have any specific concerns or questions

What if my child does not pass?

Students can continue to sit these tests (twice a year) until they pass. Alternatively until the end of 2027 there are a small number of alternative standards which can be used to gain their literacy and numeracy requirements, including English, Maths, Science and Social Sciences. However these credits will then not count towards their overall 60 credits.

What about SACs?

Students with Special Assessment Conditions (SACs) will be contacted individually regarding how they will be accommodated. Please contact Aran Taylor or Gaynor Tahitahi, if you have questions regarding SACS.
