Welcome to Year 7 & Year 8 Sport at Mahu
During the first two years at Mahurangi College our aim is to get maximum involvement for our Year 7 and 8 students in a wide range of sports as they begin their pathway towards sporting excellence into their senior years. Sport for Year 7 and 8 is offered through Lunchtime Sport, Team Sports and North Harbour and Auckland Zone Days.
ATTENDANCE
In 2026, as one strategy, we will be introducing a 90+% attendance rate requirement for participation in key school events like the AIMS games and zone days.
SPORT AT LUNCHTIME
Organised lunchtime sport is offered to all age groups in the Gymnasium or on the sports field. Our Sports Prefects, with the help of our Sports Council, organise a variety of different activities for students to be involved in.
Our SAY (Sport All Year) Shed is available to hire out sports equipment at lunch time. Our Sports prefects and Sport council open the SAY shed 3x lunch times every week. Here students can take out any of the sports equipment we have to keep active during lunch time.
Check daily notices for more information or contact our Sports Department.

TRIALS
At Mahurangi College, we want to make sure our sports trials are organised, fair, and provide the best opportunities for our students. Below is an outline of how our trials work and what students need to know:
Pre-Trial Registrations
● All students must be pre-registered to participate in sports trials.
● Once registered, each student will be assigned a number, which will be written on their arm or leg at the trial. This helps us identify players during the process.
On the Day of Trials
● Selectors and Administration Team: Every trial is supported by our administration team and trained selectors to ensure fairness.
● Staff Presence: A Mahurangi College staff member will always be present to oversee the trial and assist as needed.
● Game Scheduling: Students will play in predetermined games, which are arranged to give everyone a chance to showcase their skills.
● Students need to come prepared with their correct sporting items.
Unable to Attend?
If you are unable to attend your trial, please contact the Sports Department as soon as possible.
All trials for our sports teams are closed events. We ask that parents and caregivers do not attend these sessions. Players are selected based on skills, position, versatility, commitment and availability.
AIMS Games Tournament
Teams for the AIMS Games Tournament in Tauranga are selected through a trial process. A variety of teams will be taken to this week-long event.
Due to the event's schedule, students are only allowed to participate in one team sport. However, a student may also take part in an individual sport alongside their team sport, provided they have approval from the Director of Sport, in consultation with the Coach.
All teams selected to attend the AIMS Games will be accommodated across various houses in the local area. Each house will be supervised by a Mahurangi College staff member.
AIMS Games Teams Attending the AIMS Games 2026:
The school works through a selection process that takes into consideration gender equity, staff availability, and accommodation options.
Individual Sports:
There are several individual sports available for participation. Due to limited accommodation spaces, students wishing to compete in an individual sport are required to arrange their own accommodation. Selection for individual sports must be approved by the Director of Sport.

Year 7 & 8 Zone Days
Year 7/8 students can participate in a variety of sports, developing skills and teamwork through North Harbour Zone Days, which are one-day events.
Due to the cost and time involved in these events, and to maximize the number of students engaging in a wide variety of sports, Year 7 and 8 students may participate in only two zone days per term, outside of their weekly code competition. Registration for these events are through the schools main
notice system. It is the students responsibility to register themselves for zone days.
As a parent/caregiver you can access the Student Daily Notices to stay up to date through the SchoolBridge app.
SPORTS BLUES AWARDS
The Sports Blues Award is a prestigious honour presented to students who have achieved outstanding success in their sporting activities. Recipients will be recognised with a Blues badge and an official certificate.
Further information about the application process and eligibility criteria will be sent out during Term 3. Parents will be required to submit an application by completing the Google Form that will be shared at that time for their child to be considered.
