Rippa Rugby Tournament

Cam Fraser —

It was a privilege for Mana College to host the first ever Rippa Rugby Tournament for Athletes with a Disability. On a typical autumn day for rugby (breezy and overcast) we had five schools participating in a round robin tournament. Newlands College, Wanuiomata College, Heretaunga and the mighty Te Whare Ako team from Mana all competed for the coveted title of champions. For many this was the first time playing Rippa, but that didn't stop them from displaying incredible breakaway tries, fast paced action and great ball handling skills.

Mana College were given three games in row, by third we were looking pretty tired. The games were close at times, but we came out on top. Heretaunga also showed how capable a team they were by winning their matches. The final game shaped up as a final between the two heavyweights of competition. Heretaunga took early lead and left Mana's defence scrambling at times. However towards the end of the game, Mana started to fight back. Unfortunately it wasn't quite enough, losing the final 4-7. Heretaunga went away as deserved champions and we will look to compete for the title next year.

What I was most proud of, was the way our TWA students competed and supported the other visiting schools. "Mana with Mana" was most evident when the schools commented on how "nice and helpful" our students had been. They can all be very proud of themselves.
A special thanks goes to the students of 11CO who helped support the morning, and the 4 students who refereed the competition. A BIG mihi to Wellington Rugby and Bryan from College Sport who provided support and equipment for the event.
