STARS Community Adventure

Jeff Chapman —

On Wednesday 12th June the STARS Community Adventure took place around Porirua City. The purpose of the event was to;

a) help students get to know and connect to their community,

b) give students the opportunity to explore community resources and support, and

c) provide an opportunity for students to transfer the learning gained from the Adventure Camp in term 1 to the community context.

All the above were easily achieved and a whole lot of fun was had in the process. The whole Yr 9 cohort, their Yr 12/13 Mentors and LA teachers went to 10 different locations around the city. That included Takupuwahia Marae, Pataka, Te Rauparaha Arena, Whitireia Polytech, Trash Palace, Pember House, the CBD revitalisation project and Ora Toa Health Centre.

Multiple tasks, clues, riddles, photos and videos were taken or completed, including a banner, chant and haka competition between all the yr 9 LA classes.

The day was blessed by calm weather and was a roaring success. The next STARS event will be in late term 3 where the students will be involved in a community project - giving back to their community.
