Cook Island Language Week

Janine Laumua —

This year’s theme for Te ‘Epetoma o te reo Māori Kūki ‘Āirani – Cook Islands Language Week is ‘Ātui’ia au ki te vaka o tōku matakeinanga, which means, "connect me the canoe of my tribe".

The theme focuses on deepening Cook Islands people's connection to their traditions, cultures, and their dialects of their many islands through their familial ties, cultural traditions of their enua, vaka, and the songs, dance, and pe’e (chants) of their family.

Starting the celebrations with a Flag Raising Ceremony on Monday 5 August at the Peace Memorial from 8am, followed by morning tea and refreshments at Pātaka.

We have a few events planned for throughout the week here at school ending with Te Kiwa Nui Festival (Wellington Northern Region Polyfest) – celebrating 54 years, a showcase of dance & music by 8 Porirua secondary schools.

Some stall holders will be onsite.
