Principal's Message

John Murdoch —

Talofa Lava, Melo le lei, Bula Vinaka, Noa’ia, Kia Orana and warm Pacific greetings to you all.

Today I had the pleasure of being a part of the Porirua Pasifika United 22. It's so good to be back in the swing of events like these and it was pure joy to watch our Samoan and Cook Island Groups up on stage performing with pride.

Many thanks to Jacs Nordon, Helen Kopa, George Ruaporo, Aunty Kava, Tira, Huia Shepherd, Qyanah Taia-Roberts and The Drummers (Cook Island Group) and Tupe Papali'i and Filisione Koloamatangi who spent so many hours organising customs, rides home, kai and teaching our young people about their culture.

We are hosting this event next year and we look forward to making sure it's organised as well as Porirua College who were this year's hosts.

NCEAAs we move into the 'business end' of the year, it's important to remember a few things regarding our student's achievement.

  1.  A two page report is published fortnightly (next one is 19th August) which tells you about your young person's NCEA progress. This comes through to your email we have on our records. If you're not getting this, please check your spam and then let Cheryl at the office know or send her an email at office@mana.school.nz
  2. Yesterday, the Associate Minister of Education announced changes to NCEA that recognise the impact student and teacher absences due to COVID-19 and other winter illnesses have had on teaching, learning and assessment this year. Students will be entitled to 1 Learning Recognition Credit (LRC) for every 5 credits earned through assessment, up to a maximum of:

NCEA Level Maximum LRCs:

1 10
2 8
3 8

To receive a Certificate Endorsement, students will need 46 credits at Merit or Excellence level,
instead of the usual 50.
To be awarded University Entrance, students will need 14 credits in each of two UE Approved
Subjects, and 12 credits in a third UE Approved Subject (they will also need to attain NCEA
Level 3 and meet the regular literacy and numeracy requirements). This is great news for those particularly in Year 11-13

3. School attendance. Bluntly, if students are not attending or late this will affect their NCEA achievement. If students attendance is 90% or over this will assure them of doing well in school. As parents, your job is to get them to school; our job is to unleash their 'superpowers'. Teamwork.
