Driving programme @Mana

Andrew McMillan —

Mana college is committed to ensure that our students pursue purposeful pathways whilst flourishing as active learners.

One way that we aim to achieve this is through a comprehensive driving programme. Our aim is to produce safe young drivers who are work ready. This year we will be running 3 learners licence courses (2 in the school holidays in July and October) 1 in term 3 during the school week. This means that 60 students from years 11 to 13 will gain this qualification.

The next step on licence acquisition is restricted and with the support of our friends at Partners Porirua and the Howard league we will be supporting 7 x yr 13 students to gain their restricted starting this week and continuing until the students gain the qualification.

To get to the next level and to ensure that our rangatahi are safe and responsible on the roads we support students to get their defensive driving qualification. Normally this would involve students attending an AA defensive driving course after school in the evenings. This year we will trial an in house facilitated AA course taking part in term 3. Initially 6 students will attend this with the intention of running another course with the students currently participating in the restricted course.

Evidence suggests that young people with a driving licence are more attractive to employers and we have lots of anecdotal evidence that our students can support their families once they gain a driving qualification."
