Year 10 Science trip to Titahi Bay

Anna Thornton —

On Wednesday over 80 Mana College students spent the day at Titahi Bay Beach. With the support of staff and senior students from both Yr.12/13 Marine Biology and Outdoor Education classes, the year 10 science students took part in a range of different activities.

These included:

- Learning about waste water, where it comes from and how it affects the bay - Finding and identify microplastics in the sand and seeing how much of an issue is it- Searching through rock pools to find marine organisms- highlights were lots of anemones, and the occasional crab and starfish!- Classifying and identifying shells- Coming up with investigative questions we're curious to learn more about!

We were really lucky with the beautiful sunny weather and the students made the most of learning outside the classroom.

Thanks to the senior students for their support and especially to the Science teaching staff who organised and ran the day.

We are keen to make this an annual Yr.10 trip, so if any whānau have expertise about the Bay and could be keen to help with planning and/or running next year's trip please get in touch with annat@mana.school.nz
