Acting Principal's message

Greg Sharland —

Pink Shirt Day assembly yesterday was a fitting way to end a week that has allowed us to reflect on what it means to be a part of a safe community. Bully-free week promotes inclusivity, kindness, and community. This week was a way to remind ourselves of that and think about our individual and collective responsibilities in promoting this. The assembly that concluded the week was, undoubtedly, a showcase of the talents of our ākonga and the inclusive nature of our Kura. Student-led and full of colour and fun, it was a perfect way to finish the week. Big thanks to the students and teachers who made it all happen.

Today (Friday) is the first of four mandated NCEA accord days. The purpose of these days is to support the implementation of changes to NCEA, and wider strengthening of curriculum, progress, and achievement practice. The changes to NCEA and the wider curriculum include a more inclusive approach to learning and assessment, a greater focus on Mātauranga Māori and Mana Ōrite, and streamlining Achievement Standards for NCEA subjects. This is the most significant change to secondary education since the introduction of NCEA in 2002. It is an exciting piece of work and one that our teachers are looking forward to. More information can be found here.

On the evening of Tuesday 31st May, we welcome whanau to our Parent/Teacher evening. This is a great opportunity to have a face-to-face conversation with your child's teachers and check on their progress. Currently, we have planned for one evening but if the demand is high we are happy to add an extra night to the calendar. Please check our website for further details or check in with your child's LA teacher.

Next Wednesday (25 May) is the first Beards Trophy match for the year. Mana College proudly won back the trophy last year in the first challenge and held the trophy for the remaining games. This year's team is looking to emulate that achievement starting with challenge number one against Tawa College, 6 pm, Jerry Collins Stadium. Come out and support the team.
