Transition Expo - What's Outside the Box?

Cam Fraser —

Last Saturday March 18th, Whitireia Polytechnic was buzzing with people looking to find opportunities for disabled students as they transition out of secondary school.

What's Outside the Box? Was an expo put on by a team of volunteers including staff from Te Whare Ako, Ministry of Social Development, Ministry of Education, WellAble and the Tertiary Education Commission.

Coordinator and Mana College teacher, Cam Fraser said it was beyond his expectations with over 500 people attending the event. It was officially opened by Ngati Toa Rangatira and attended by a number of Porirua, Wellington City Councillors and local Mayor, Anita Baker.

Many of our Mana College students and staff came to visit and soak up the atmosphere. Alongside over 40 organisations, there was plenty to see and do - dance performances, sports including karate, art activities, food and products made by disabled creators for sale to name just some.

Hopefully the expo will become an annual event as a way of bringing together people and services for the disability community.
