DRAMA: NCEA LEVEL 1

Course description: This course will explore the idea of whakawhanaungatanga (establishing relationships) through Theatre in Aotearoa. Students will learn to participate in the creation of a piece of drama and perform a role in a scripted production. This course will also develop your ability to break down and discuss the content of live theatre performances.

Skills and learning:

  • Collaboration

  • Development of empathy and building positive relationships

  • Understanding of Theatre Aotearoa - including play texts from Maori, Pacifica and Pakeha playwrights

Possible Pathways:

This course works towards the Creative Industry Vocational Pathway in the fields of Theatre, Film, TV, and Radio.

NCEA Assessment: 20 Achievement Standard credits

Exclusions:

Open entry. but if you have not done year 10 Drama a conversation with Ms Moxey or Whaea Laura is advised.

DANCE: NCEA LEVEL 1

Dance at level 1 will explore stories through movement. Students will learn to create dances using a choreographic process. Students will learn the dance vocabulary and how this informs movement on stage.

  • Exploring and developing an understanding of cultural dances

    This course works towards the Creative Industries Vocational Pathway in the fields of Theatre, Film, Television, and Radio. Learning through the performing arts is a rich context for learning and also seen as a key method of developing the brain and supports learning in all other career pathways.

NCEA Assessment: 

20 Achievement Standard credits

Exclusions:

Open entry. But if you have not done year 10 Dance a conversation with Ms Moxey is advised. 


DANCE AND DRAMA: NCEA LEVELS 2 and 3

Course description:

This is a combined dance and drama performance course, which will focus on learning techniques and different genres of dance and drama. Students will work in groups and pairs in most assessments.

Possible pathways:

This course works towards the Creative Industries Vocational Pathway in the fields of Theatre, Film, Television, and Radio. Learning through the performing arts is a rich context for learning and also seen as a key method of developing the brain and supports learning in all other career pathways.

NCEA credits available:

21 Achievement Standard credits(includes 4 writing UE literacy credits) 

Exclusions: Entry is open. Students must come with a positive attitude and a willingness to be challenged and receptive.

  • Explore the musical histories of your whakapapa

  • Discuss diverse music contexts

  • Understand how diverse contexts inform creative musical output

  • Understand how music contexts are expressed through combinations of music concepts

  • Understand how music is a waka to explore diverse world views

  • Explore tikanga and reo features of Māori music

  • Explore what ihi, wehi, and wana mean in a Māori music context

  • Explore how music ideas can be communicated with intent

  • Use music concepts to create an intended effect

  • Develop awareness of musical performance within contrasting contexts

  • Participate in music-making

  • Gain experience in performing music for an audience

  • Experience the process of creating original music

  • Understand that every music context has its own learning

Course description:

In this full year course, you will learn and develop solo and group performance skills, create, notate and perform original music, you will learn and develop skills in reading and writing music and to study selected songs as case studies. This is a programme intended for the focused student who wants to continue to develop as a life-long learner and musician and students are encouraged to enter music competitions.

Possible pathways:

This course works towards the Creative Industries Vocational Pathway in the fields of Theatre, Film, Musical Performances, Television, and Radio. Learning about music is also seen as a key method of developing the brain and supports learning in all other career pathways.

NCEA credits available: 28 Achievement Standard credits(Includes 4 literacy credits)

Exclusions: Entry Is open, but a reasonable understanding of musical concepts and some music ability is desirable.


MUSIC: NCEA LEVEL 3

Course description:

In this full year course, you will learn and develop solo and group performance skills, create, notate and perform original music, you will learn and develop skills in reading and writing music and to study selected songs as case studies. This is a programme intended for the focused student who wants to continue to develop as a life-long learner and musician and students are encouraged to enter music competitions.

NCEA credits available: 30 Achievement Standard credits(Includes 6 UE literacy credits)

Exclusions: Entry Is open, but a reasonable understanding of musical concepts and some music ability is desirable.

TE WHARE HAKA: NCEA LEVELS 1, 2 and 3

Course description: 

Te Whare Haka offers a range of NCEA credits at levels 1-3 through the world of Māori Performing Arts. The course offers different aspects of Māori performing arts including significant people associated with Kapa Haka, performance aspects and tikanga and kawa around Kapa Haka and the many associated taonga.

There is a written and practical component to this course and akonga will be expected to participate in both. This course is a perfect platform for those who aspire to stand at the next Regional Kapa Haka campaign in 2025.

Possible pathways: Teaching (early childhood to Tertiary), Māori Business, Environmental, Hauora - Māori Health, Tourism, Māori Media, Māori Business and Governance. This combined with Te Reo Māori allows access to Te Waharoa (L2/L3 National Certificate in Māori)

NCEA credits available: 

Level 1 - 20 AS credits - 12 Internal and 8 External

Level 2 - 20 AS credits - 12 Internal and 8 External

Level 3 - 20 AS credits - 10 Internal and 10 External

Unit Standards are also available for akonga who may be new to Kapa Haka or new to matauranga connected to Māori Performing Arts.
