Titahi Bay Beach Clean Up

Jeff Chapman —

In between rain showers on Wednesday this week the yr 12/13 Outdoor Education class conducted a beach clean up at Titahi Bay Beach. This was an environmental action project run by one of the groups in the class. Another group documented the day using photos, video and interviews. Whilst at the beach a deceased Olive Rigby turtle was discovered in front of the surf club.

The Department of Conservation (DoC) hotline was called and not long after, DoC rangers picked the turtle up. We were fortunate enough to have the DoC rangers explain how the turtle may have come to be on the beach. The students also participated in robust discussion with the rangers about the tikanga expected in dealing with such a find.

The group also picked up about 70 litres of rubbish in 30 minutes, plus contributed to the nationwide Litter Intelligence survey. See this link form more information https://litterintelligence.org/data/survey?id=2606

I'm very proud of the class with the environmental actions and critical thinking they are taking to improve our world and taiao.
